A Chia herb garden can be a quick and easy option for the novice gardener who wants to try their hand at growing their own plants.

With the patented Chia growing system and a selection of herb seeds, a Chia herb garden takes all the guesswork out of container gardening and can even be the first step in planting your own outdoor garden.

Though herb gardening is among the easiest & simplest forms of gardening, the Chia system makes it even simpler.

Using the same unique growing sponge made of peat moss, bark and sponge that is used for other Chia plants, all the guesswork is taken out of gardening. The sponge helps regulate the air to water ratio, ensuring the ideal growing environment.

As with any Chia plant, the Chia herb garden uses a few simple steps to get your herbs growing. Just tuck the sponge into the pot and sprinkle the accompanying seeds onto it, then moisten lightly and cover the entire thing with an open sandwich bag to retain moisture.

Before long, you should see growth.

Once the plants have begun to sprout you can uncover them and move them to a windowsill to begin tending to them like you would with any standard herb gardening.

The seeds don’t need a tremendous amount of direct sunlight, but the plants will, so a windowsill with southern exposure should work best.

With the sponge system, the Chia herb garden allows you to avoid the trouble of finding just the right soil or some other kind of potting mixture to help your herbs grow.

And there is almost no limit to the kind of herbs you can grow. Chia offers a variety of seeds including Basil, Chives, Cilantro, Dill, Parsley and Sweet Marjoram. You can pick and choose which ones you’d like to grow and they should all grow easily.

All of these are among the most popular edible herbs, used in everything from tomato sauce to salad to soup and other dishes.

There are almost no limits to the benefits you can get from this type of herbs gardening and with the easy grow system, almost no way you can avoid being successful!

And perhaps the best part of the Chia herb garden experience is that it doesn’t have to end once your plants have reached full growth.

You can easily transplant from the small pots in the Chia kit to a larger windowsill container or directly to your garden. Just move the plant, sponge and all, and plant it in your desired location, it’s that simple!

If you’ve ever considered starting an herb garden but were afraid to try, the Chia garden may be the perfect first step for you.

Everything you need for a successful windowsill garden is provided in one kit. Follow the instructions and you’ll have a fragrant, thriving herb garden of your very own before you even know it!

Looney Balloon Games For Kids Parties
by: Patricia B. Jensen

What’s a kids party without balloons? Great for decorating, party favors, and of course, party games. Floating balloons, googly balloons, water balloons, screaming balloons … Here’s a great collection of looney balloon games kids will love.

BALLOON POP RELAY

Form guests into two lines facing a bag of balloons about 20 feet away. At the starting signal, guests must race to the balloon bag, take one out and pop it as quickly as possible by sitting on it, stepping on it, or any other means. They then race back and tag the next team member in their line. The first team to have every player pop a balloon is the winner.

BALLOON BALANCE

Blow up about 10-15 balloons and place them on the floor. Each guest has 2 minutes (use a timer) to pick up and hold as many balloons as possible. They must pick up the balloons all by themselves without help, put them in their clothes, between their legs, under their arms, between their teeth, etc. Each guest takes a turn while the others watch and laugh themselves silly! The guest who holds the most balloons when their time is up is the winner.

BALLOON BOP

Form guests into a circle with an adult leader in the middle with a balloon. Each guest will have a chance to hit the balloon to keep it up, but here’s the catch. The leader will call out the person’s name and a body part, and they must use that body part to hit the balloon upwards to keep it in play. You can use hands, feet, knee, elbow, head, and hips or butt. Players who use the wrong body part or let the balloon fall to the ground are out. The last player standing with the balloon in play is the winner.

CATCH THE BALLOON

Gather children in a circle around the adult leader. Toss a balloon in the air and call one child’s name. That child must catch the balloon before it touches the ground. If the child succeeds, she gets to toss the balloon and call the next name.

BALLOONS AND BEADS

Fill 20-30 balloons with two to four beads each and hide the filled balloons around the house or yard. Divide guests into groups of two and tie one set of hands and one set of feet together. Each team must find as many balloons as they can, pop them by themselves, and return with their beads. The team with the most beads at the end of the game is the winner.

GOOGLY BALLOONS

Blow up balloons, putting a small marble through the neck of each one before tying the end. This makes the balloons move in unexpected ways. Release into the group one more balloon than children. The object is to keep the balloons up in the air. Play this in two teams, each side with an extra balloon. The team who lets a balloon drop to the floor first loses.

FLOATING BALLOONS

Pass out a large balloon to each guest. Let them blow up their balloon and offer your help tying each one securely. The object of this game is to hit the balloons up into the air and keep them afloat for the longest period of time. This is a fun and easy way to start or end any party!

BALLOON POP

Place notes inside un-inflated balloons, one or two of the notes should indicate that this balloon is a winner. Inflate the balloons and hang them around. Let each child pick a balloon then pop it to see if their note is a winner.

BALLOON FAVORS

Before the party, insert a small, light-weight party favor such as a sticker, into the opening of a balloon before inflating it. Then, inflate the balloon and repeat until you have a balloon for each guest. Use these balloons to decorate the party area. At the end of the party, each guest may take a balloon and pop it by sitting on it, kicking it, etc. to get the prize hidden inside.

ROUND UP THE HERD

For this game you will need two brooms, a long string to mark your course, six balloons (and a few extra in case any should pop). Set up an obstacle course in your party area using boxes, chairs, bushes, trees, etc. Mark the path of your obstacle course with string.

Divide your party guests into two teams and line up both teams at the starting line. Give the first person in each line a broom and three balloons. (Be sure to use different colored balloons for each team). They must use the broom to herd their wild ponies (balloons) through the course.

Each player must herd their balloons through the entire course to complete their turn. The first team to finish the course, wins! If a balloon pops during a player’s turn, he or she must take a new balloon to the starting line and begin again.

BALLOON RELAY RACE #1

Instruct the children to stand in two single-file lines, facing forward. Place a balloon between the knees of the first child in each line. When the race starts, the first child on each team turns to face the next person in line. The second child must grasp the balloon with his or her knees and turn to pass it on to the third person, and so on. If the balloon falls to the ground, the team must start over. The first team to successfully pass the balloon down the line, wins!

BALLOON RELAY RACE #2

Divide guests into two or more equal teams and have them stand in a line. Give each team ten balloons in a basket or trash bag. The first child in each line takes a balloon and runs to the other side of the room and sits or stomps on the balloon to pop it. They then run back to the line and tag the next person who does the same thing. The winning team is the one who pops all their balloons the fastest.

WATER BALLOON TOSS

Fill up to 50 water balloons, depending the number and place them in large buckets. Divide guests into teams of two, standing and facing each other. They begin by tossing a water balloon back and forth, taking a step backward with each toss. If the balloon pops, the team is out. The last team with an intact balloon wins.

MUSICAL WATER BALLOONS

Guests sit in a large circle, about 4 feet apart. They must pass a water balloon around the circle as music is played, without breaking it. Everyone who gets wet is out, as well as each person left with the balloon when the music stops

SCREAMING BALLOONS

This isn’t a party game, but it’s just as fun as one! Tell kids you know how to make a balloon scream. Before the party, drop a hex nut into a latex balloon and inflate. When you’re ready to demonstrate, hold the balloon in both hands and move it rapidly in a circular motion. Can you hear it scream?

The unique six-sided shape of the hex nut vibrates the walls of the balloon as it moves, producing a rather unique “screaming” sound.

Stock up on hex nuts and balloons because all your party guests will want to try this one!

Are there any raspberry plant varieties suitable for container gardening?

I have a patio, but I don't have a yard. I'd like to grow some raspberries but I'm thinking that this plant may not be suited to container gardening. A raised bed isn't an option – I'd have to do a large container with a trellis or something. Is this possible?

I live in zone 5 of the US, if that matters.

Container gardening is for everyone. Whether all your gardening is done on a deck, in window boxes, even if you have an eighty by fifty foot garden, plants in containers will always have their place – can always be used to highlight, illuminate, accent and decorate your out-door living areas and places of visual prominence.

Metal pans, clay urns, terra cotta pots, wine tubs, wood boxes, bath tubs, glass bowls, wire baskets, sisal rope planters, cement hollows, hyper tufa hand crafted containers and broken crocks – to mention a few, all work well as planters.

Real wine tubs are excellent because they are already naturally ‘cured’ so resist rot. Redwood and Cedar are the most expensive woods but they last wonderfully well outdoors, need no weather treatment beyond a quick spraying of a preservative and are a pleasure to see, but beware. Many ready made planters are built of solid cedar on the outside but use toxic treated pine on the inside. Look for a sickly greenish yellow color. If it doesn’t look inside like the same wood on the outside, don’t buy it, or put a liner in it.

Liners can be made of metal, fiber glass or plastic, none of which is ideal because they don’t breathe but all of which will work. If you use a liner be sure to provide holes for good drainage.

Redwood planters are often dyed and that dye is questionable, as are those planters’ method of binding, (often flat metal bands which break before the wood has deteriorated.) If you choose a planter of this kind, you will do well to give it extra support before the binding breaks.

When selecting or making wood planters keep in mind that the more soil surrounding the roots of the plants the less tendency there is for desiccation and for freezing so keep them as large as space and pocket allow.

Terra Cotta pots are better than glazed clay or plastic pots because their permeability allows the passage of air. If you have a particularly pretty glazed pot, you’re better off planting in a plain pot and putting that inside the decorative one.

Container Making

With a little labor you can make your own attractive pots and basins. Here’s how:

If you have access to a level of ground: Dig a hole to the desired depth of pot you want. Take a plastic container, ( a child’s bucket, a water jug with the pointed end cut off, etc.) and put a round hole or two in the bottom. Coat the outside with vegetable oil and place it upside down in the hole over a mound of earth leaving, about two inches evenly all around between the container and the surrounding soil, and between the top, which will become the bottom of the pot, and the ground.

Into the holes of the container place snug fitting dowels or sticks extending above ground level. (The cement is going to go over the bottom of the plastic container and the dowels will stick through it, for drainage holes.)

Purchase a bag of sackrete, (a ready mix of sand, gravel and cement), and a small bag of peat moss. Mix a batch of sackrete, (follow directions on the package, making it the consistency of thick soup), adding a couple handfuls of peat, and if you like, of soil for an earthier look.

Pour this mixture into the hole and over the top of the plastic container

being sure the sticks are protruding through, and tamp it down. When the mix becomes firm, but not hard, carefully twist out the sticks.

When the concrete is hardened, (there are different kinds of mixes so read the bag label to see when this should be), remove your pot from the ground. The plastic container should slide out readily. Wire brush or hose off the pot and plant it up.

If you don’t have access to a level of ground: Get two cardboard boxes, one of which fits into the other with about an inch or two of space between all around. Unless they are very strong, reinforce them with tape around the sides and over the corners. Smear some vegetable over the inside of the larger and the outside of the smaller. Cut several candles each to two inches in length and fix these to the bottom of the larger box, evenly spaced. Make the mix as described above and fill the larger box to the tops of the candles.

Place the smaller box inside the larger, resting on the candles, and put a little weight in it. Work the sackrete mix between the boxes to whatever height you want the sides of your container to be. If necessary you can put small blocks of wood between the two boxes to keep the spacing right.

When the concrete mix is hardened, pull away the boxes. If the candles don’t easily pull out of the bottom you can drill through them.

Experimenting with these two methods you can fairly easily make a variety of shapes and sizes of attractive containers.

Designing With Containers

If you are grouping containers together, such as on a deck, a variety of sizes gives the best look. Aesthetically, you are better off with say, one large container and two smaller rather than three medium sized pots. In addition, they needn’t all be on the same plane.

Put a few on benches or tables or inverted pots and if possible, use hanging baskets and wall planters as well. All manner of old tubs and basins can be effective design elements in a container garden and as with size, a variety will give a richer look than will a collection of pots all of the same kind. Do have a repetition of textures, however, as overly eclectic can look too busy.

As with containers, a variety of plants, from small ornamental trees through shrubs and vines to perennials and annuals creates the most satisfying container garden. The idea, generally, and if space allows, is to create an environment, an little ecosystem comprised of members from several plant groups. Hanging baskets contribute to this effect too, bringing the garden upward and allowing it to reach downward. A future edition will be dedicated to hanging baskets and wall planters.

What Size of container is ideal for Raspberries. container gardening planting?

I was considering doing a bunch of little raised beds for raspberries made out of scrap industrial ductwork, only I can't find the scrap ductwork and I'm thinking of moving in a couple years. I got the idea that maybe a container would better suit my needs.

What is an ideal size of container to grow fruiting raspberry bushes?

There are rigid black plastic storage containers on sale at home depot right now. They're 18 gallons at about 20 x 16 x 16 inches. Would these do the trick with one plant in each container?

I would drill holes in the bottom of the things for drainage and put 2 inches of mulch at the top.

I already have a bunch of gardening soil, mushroom compost, and topsoil laying around in bags. Could I use that in the containers? Should I mix some sand or something in with it to make it drain better?

3 Essential Tips For Growing Herbs Indoors

Growing your own herb plants is a good way to create fresh, aromatic herbs for many different purposes. Growing herbs indoors is simple since herb plants grow well in pots and they thrive in sunny window sills. Any type of pot or container that allows for well-drained soil will be a welcome home for herb plants.

There are three (3) important things necessary for an indoor herb garden and these are the same essential things needed for outdoor herb gardens too. They include:

1. Adequate sunlight
2. Well-drained soil
3. Plenty of water

These three things are important for growing herbs indoors so a window sill or surface where sun enters through a door or window is important. A kitchen herb garden is an excellent place to start. If there is a window in the kitchen that faces south or west, you can take greater advantage of natural sunlight. If you have a problem with a lack of adequate sunlight, growing herbs indoors can also be accomplished by using a light source such as a “grow lamp” or fluorescent lamp. While these are available, natural sunlight is always preferred if it is available.

Soil is the next important consideration. Herb Plants grow best in well-drained soil that is not too rich. Using two parts sterilized potting soil with one part coarse sand or perlite for herbs is a good mixture for pots. It is also beneficial to put about an inch of gravel or small rocks in the bottom of each pot to allow for adequate drainage. When growing herbs indoors, it is essential to ensure that pots do not become too wet and drainage helps avoid this problem. Adding about a teaspoon of lime for a 5-inch pot will help ensure that the soil is best suited for herbs. When the soil is optimal, the herb plants will grow strong and healthy and maintaining the herb plants will be easier.

Next, don’t overlook the importance of water when growing herbs indoors. Herb Plants grown in pots need adequate water, although it’s important not to over-water them. Herbs grow well when misted lightly with cool water. When growing herbs indoors in pots or containers, water them more often but avoid drenching the roots and leaving them soggy. They will not thrive in a pot that is too wet. A light spritz of water is a good way to keep them damp but not saturated.
<br1000 />
When growing herbs indoors, it is easy to start a herb garden without a lot of fuss and trouble. Following these three essential tips for indoor herb garden projects will help ensure that your herb plants are healthy and produce fragrant herbs for cooking or other purposes. This is just the beginning of the wonderful experience of herb gardening and before you know it, you’ll be ready to take your indoor herb garden into the outdoors too.

Gardening Tips, Techniques And Plant Information
by: Roger King

Some of the most spectacular gardening is on the rooftops and patios of the world’s largest cities. Today’s homeowners and apartment dwellers do not have to discard gardening. In fact, they can create their own garden hideaway.

Gardening in small space means you plant in containers, choose plants carefully, grow up on trellises instead of outdoor, hang plants from something overhead. Herbs, vegetables, shrubs, and citrus fruits can all be grown in containers. More and more vegetable varieties are available specifically for container growing.

For small-space growing people can grow in everything from custom-made pottery to clay pots and wooden planters. Your gardening containers must have drainage holes at the bottom. Cover the holes with a section of window screen so the soil doesn’t leak out.

Get a bag of dry, soulless mix for container gardening. You need to soak the soil with water before planting. This process can be messy, so plan ahead and do it outside if possible. Moisten only as much as you’ll need for the current task.

Keep an eye on your gardening container. It can dry out quickly in hot weather. If you really get into it, you might want to consider a drip irrigation system. This is a network of plastic tubing that can be regulated to provide a constant moisture supply to your plants.

Most plants need an average of 1 inch of water every week. You should try to water your garden plants earlier in the day, so the sun can help dry off any water left on the plant. If you see a plant drooping, be sure to water it, because some plants wilt and do not recover if they dry out.

Making Container Gardening Beautiful With Roses

According to the National Gardening Association, 91 million households participated in some form of do-it-yourself lawn and gardening activity in 2005, spending an average of $387. Over the past decade, an increasing percentage of this total has gone towards container gardening.

Containers offer a versatile form of gardening that fits into any lifestyle and yard size. City dwellers can use them to brighten up lifeless balconies, roof decks or front stoops, while those with more space can decorate high-traffic spaces and incorporate them into lawn and garden areas for added drama and flair. Because of the multitude of options on the market, container gardens are an easy way to add a splash of color to any outdoor space, big or small.

Roses are among the most spectacular and rewarding choices for a container because of their combination of color, fragrance and season-long blooms. Also, with advances in hybridizing, roses are easier to grow than ever before. Look for the All-America Rose Selections (AARS) rose logo as a “seal of approval,” which indicates that the rose excelled in the most difficult plant trial in the world: two years of testing in 23 gardens across the country, representing all climate zones. By performing well against 15 criteria including fragrance, ease of maintenance and disease resistance, AARS roses are proven to be the very best.

Tom Carruth, director of research at Weeks Roses and hybridizer of eight AARS Winners in the past nine years, provides the following tips for building the perfect container rose garden:

” Pick the right pot. Size is the most important consideration. Make sure the pot is not too small and, when in doubt, go for the larger size to allow the roots to grow without constraint over time. Make sure all pots have at least one drainage hole to prevent root rot. Do not use saucers beneath the pot; instead, use pot “feet” to lift the pot off any surface and guarantee good drainage.

” Get the good dirt. Roses prefer a well-drained soil. The commercial soil mixes do well but can dry out quickly. Consider adding some soil from your garden to help stabilize the mix and extend the moisture retention. Plants grown in pots require more water,
1000
organic matter and fertilizer than plants in the ground.

” Select the right spot. Remember, roses like full sun and good air circulation. Since pots have the advantage of mobility, you can move the pot around to find just the right location.

” Think vertical. Place a rose bush in the center of the container and surround with “filler” and “spiller” plants at the base. The rose plant draws the eye upwards and adds height to the space, while the fillers and spillers cover the base and accentuate the container.

” Group plants strategically. Choose plants with the same sunlight and watering requirements as roses. Shallow-rooted fillers do best as they will not compete with the deeper rose roots. Try annuals such as sweet alyssum or lobelia, or consider smaller creeping herbs such as thyme or ornamental oregano.

” Don’t forget the foliage. Mix colorful plants with those in various shades of green to create a more intensified, three-dimensional effect. Smaller, variegated ivy hybrids look great and will spill out over sides of the container as they grow.

” Consider “pot-scaping.” Choose pots of different sizes and shapes that are made from similar material or those that are similar in color to create a complementary and leveled look. Pot feet can also be used to create levels with pots of the same size.

For the best results, experts prefer to start with AARS award-winning roses, including this year’s best new roses-Julia Child, Rainbow Sorbet, Tahitian Sunset and Wild Blue Yonder-all of which are suitable for container gardens.

These and more AARS Winners are sold in select mail-order nursery catalogs and at local nurseries and garden centers nationwide.

When you hear of growing vegetables I’m sure you will right away think of a vegetable garden plot. But do you know that you can also grow vegetables in containers? If you have limited space or living in a condominium unit or an apartment but would like to eat freshly harvested vegetables then container gardening is the answer. Here are tips on how to grow container gardening vegetables which you can enjoy and harvest fresh for your meals.

1. Choose the area in your house where you will setup your vegetable container garden. Be sure that the place you choose is airy, has sufficient sunlight, well ventilated and would be comfortable and accessible for you to work in.

2. Choose the vegetables you would want to grow in containers. Some vegetables are easy to grow in containers like onions, peppers, lettuce, tomatoes, eggplant, radish, squash and beans. Although any vegetable can grow in container gardens some of those with vines or large produce would need bigger spaces and extra care. If you do not want to put in extra hours in caring for your vegetables then you can stick with the easy to grow ones.

3. Choose a soil for your container garden. You can use ready made garden soil especially mixed for container gardens. This type of soil is light, holds nutrients and moisture and drains excess water well. You can also make your own soil the contents of which you can buy from your local garden store.

4. Choose the right containers depending on the vegetables you want to cultivate in them. Parsley and green onions can be grown in 6 to 10 inch containers while eggplants, peppers and tomatoes will grow well in 5 gallon containers. Although you can use much bigger containers, it is important that you give the roots of your vegetables enough room to grow. It should also be easy for you to move your containers around if needed. Your containers should also have drainage holes on the sides and bottom. For a good and improved drainage, line the bottom of your containers with gravel which will allow the plant to release excess water.

5. Plant your vegetables from seeds, from germinated seeds you did yourself or from shoots which you can buy from a plant nursery.

6. Water your plants once a day and place them in a well ventilated area and where they will be able to get adequate sunlight for at least 4 to 6 hours a day. For leafy plants, watering should be done twice a day but you should avoid wetting the leaves which will cause diseases in the plants.

Working on your garden and spending time in taking care of your plants will soon pay off once you harvest your fresh vegetables.

Growing up I had access to a backyard where my parents let me go wild and plant whatever I felt like that year. Sometimes I had a great harvest, other times, not so much, but until this year, I’ve never container gardened before. its …

Container gardens can create a natural sanctuary in a busy city street, along rooftops or on balconies. You can easily accentuate the welcoming look of a deck or patio with colorful pots of annuals, or fill your window boxes with beautiful shrub roses or any number of small perennials. Whether you arrange your pots in a group for a massed effect or highlight a smaller space with a single specimen, you’ll be delighted with this simple way to create a garden.

Container gardening enables you to easily vary your color scheme, and as each plant finishes flowering, it can be replaced with another. Whether you choose to harmonize or contrast your colors, make sure there is variety in the height of each plant. Think also of the shape and texture of the leaves. Tall strap-like leaves will give a good vertical background to low-growing, wide-leafed plants. Choose plants with a long flowering season, or have others of a different type ready to replace them as they finish blooming.

Experiment with creative containers. You might have an old porcelain bowl or copper urn you can use, or perhaps you’d rather make something really modern with timber or tiles. If you decide to buy your containers ready-made, terracotta pots look wonderful, but tend to absorb water. You don’t want your plants to dry out, so paint the interior of these pots with a special sealer available from hardware stores.

Cheaper plastic pots can also be painted on the outside with water-based paints for good effect. When purchasing pots, don’t forget to buy matching saucers to catch the drips. This will save cement floors getting stained, or timber floors rotting.

Always use a good quality potting mix in your containers. This will ensure the best performance possible from your plants.

If you have steps leading up to your front door, an attractive pot plant on each one will delight your visitors. Indoors, pots of plants or flowers help to create a cozy and welcoming atmosphere.

Decide ahead of time where you want your pots to be positioned, and then buy plants that suit the situation. There is no point buying sun lovers for a shady position, for they will not do well. Some plants also have really large roots, so they are best kept for the open garden.

If you have plenty of space at your front door, a group of potted plants off to one side will be more visually appealing than two similar plants placed each side. Unless they are spectacular, they will look rather boring. Group the pots in odd numbers rather than even, and vary the height and type. To tie the group together, add large rocks that are similar in appearance and just slightly different in size. Three or five pots of the same type and color, but in different sizes also look affective.

With a creative mind and some determination, you will soon have a container garden that will be the envy of friends and strangers alike.

Learn About Container Gardening

Container gardening is a wonderful idea whether you have a garden bed or not. It’s perfect for apartments or small areas, but can also really enhance your patio. Here are some tips on gardening in containers.

Every Garden can benefit from the addition of container gardens. They add interst and variety, plus are easily moved around. If you live in an apartment or have a small area to work with this may be the only solution for you.

Your Container

Your container can be pretty much anything and is only limited to your imagination. Just make sure there is adequate drainage for your plants. I love old buckets, discarded kitchen pots and baskets for a rustic feel. For a formal garden choose a more traditional container. Regardless of your choice of container, make sure it’s not to big or too small for your planting.

Your Soil

Do not use garden soil for your container plants. Garden soil is too heavy, dries out too quickly and will not provide the needed nutrients your container plants need. You can find good potting soil at your local garden center or you can mix your own. To mix your own make sure you include soil, peat, sand and a slow release fertilizer.

Maintenance

You’ll need to pay close attention to your container grown plants — much more than plants in your garden beds. The soil will dry out more quickly so frequent watering it a must. You’ll also need to fertilize more frequently. Water in the morning or evening whenever the soil is almost dry and water thoroughly until water comes out the bottom drainage holes.

One thing I really love about container gardening is mobility. If a particular grouping doesn”t work you can simply move your pots and change your garden design.

Have fun, experiment and be creative!
